The AI Literacy Companion renewed, with a European AI mentor and a bridge to CivAI Academy

Do you know how AI literate you are? With the AI Literacy Companion from Education Oracle you can find out in a few minutes. This week our free self-assessment at ailiteracycompanion.eu received a major update.
A new design, an AI mentor that now runs on an open language model in Europe, and a direct bridge to the free e-learning of CivAI Academy.
How the self-assessment works
You answer ten short questions, or you choose the extended test with 34 questions. For each question you indicate on a scale of 1 to 5 how familiar you are with the topic.
The questions are based on the Meta AI Literacy Scale, a scientifically validated questionnaire by Carolus and colleagues (2023). Afterwards you see your profile per domain, from knowledge and understanding to critical thinking and ethics. You can download that profile as a PNG or PDF, or print it.

A new look
The site has been completely redesigned, in the same calm glass style as onderwijsorakel.nl and in the colours of the logo. It works well on phone, tablet and laptop, in light and dark mode. At the top you can always see how many questions you have already answered.

An AI mentor that runs in Europe
After the questionnaire you talk to an AI mentor that knows your profile. You can ask, for example, where best to start, or have it draw up a four-week learning plan for you. The mentor first names your strengths and then picks your biggest opportunities for growth.
That mentor used to run on Microsoft Azure. It now uses Gemma 4, an open language model, at the European cloud provider Scaleway in Paris. The site itself is also hosted on a European server. Especially in an age of AI, I think it is important to show that this is perfectly possible.

Your answers and scores stay in your own browser. If you ask the mentor a question, your message and your score profile go to the language model, but we do not store those conversations. There are no cookies and no trackers.
You stay in the driving seat
The self-assessment follows the HEAR model from my book The Art of Living with AI. It starts with you, because you first indicate where you stand yourself. The mentor then thinks along with you and encourages you to check every AI answer.
What you do with the advice is up to you. The judgement stays with people.
From self-assessment to e-learning
New is the link with CivAI Academy, the free e-learning on AI literacy from CivAI. The two reinforce each other. In the academy's welcome lesson you take the self-assessment as a baseline, and at the end you take it again. That way you see what you have learned.
The other way round, the AI Literacy Companion now refers you to the academy. Below the mentor there is a direct link, and the mentor itself recommends the academy if you want to keep learning on your own. There you will find short lessons for pupils, students and teachers, free of charge and without an account.

Prefer to learn together?
Would you like to work on AI literacy with your team or programme? Education Oracle provides practical training for schools, programmes and organisations. The self-assessment is then a great starting point, because everyone can see in advance where they stand.
Take the self-assessment at ailiteracycompanion.eu and keep learning at academy.civai.eu. I am curious where you stand, and which question you will ask the mentor first.
